Audience filters decide who receives a campaign. They are the single most important part of a send — the right filters get your message to the right people, and the wrong ones waste sends and frustrate customers.

Why filters matter

Without filters, it’s easy to send the wrong email to the wrong people. Filters let you narrow a campaign down to a relevant group — for example, everyone who bought a specific session, everyone tagged as a school, or everyone with an active membership.

Filter types

Extra conditions

Most filters support additional conditions so you can narrow further:
  • Purchase date — people who bought after a certain date
  • Start date — people booked onto a session starting after a certain date
  • ID — a specific session or product
  • Location ID — a specific location
  • Family create date — families created in a certain period
  • Subscribed date — contacts who subscribed recently
  • Tag ID — contacts with a specific tag
  • Membership ID — contacts with a specific membership

Combine filters: all conditions vs any condition

When you add more than one filter, choose how they combine:
  • All conditions — the contact must match every rule. Use this to narrow down (“members at the Bristol location who bought a paddleboard hire”).
  • Any condition — the contact matches at least one rule. Use this to widen out (“anyone tagged as schools OR holding a Schools membership”).

Worked examples

Build filters reliably

1

Open the audience section

Inside the campaign, open Audience and add a filter.
2

Add the conditions

Choose the filter type and set any extra conditions.
3

Decide how filters combine

Choose All conditions or Any condition.
4

Preview the audience

Check the recipient count. If it looks too high or low, review the filter logic before sending.
Unsubscribed contacts are automatically excluded from campaign audiences. They never appear in the preview or recipient list, even if they match your filters.

Tips to avoid mistakes

  • Keep filters as simple as possible — every extra condition narrows the audience further.
  • Preview the audience every time before sending.
  • Change one thing at a time and re-preview, instead of changing several filters at once.
  • If the count looks wrong, check whether you’re using all conditions when you meant any condition (or vice versa).
